Dojo is a comprehensive and in-depth security system for smart devices and connected homes. It has three main components: Dojo device: Plugs into your router and carries out threat detection, threat prevention and network management. It analyzes traffic on the home network and enforces security.

For instance, it detects cyber threats and neutralises them. It constantly monitors the home network and all devices connected to the network. It looks for network and device behaviour that indicates something is out of the ordinary such as an attempt to insert malware onto a smart device.

Dojo Cloud: An intelligent cloud based cyber security engine that constantly collects and analyzes metadata generated by all deployed Dojo devices, irrespective of geographical location. This allows it to build a unique picture of thousands of smart homes and smart devices. If a cyber-attack is taking place on one smart home, as well as stopping the attack, it takes the data it has gleaned and adds it to a ‘reference library’ of information.

This is then applied to the thousands of other smart homes using Dojo to prevent the same attack from being carried out in other smart homes. It uses machine learning (sometimes known as artificial intelligence) and proprietary algorithms to detect, alert and mitigate threats in a completely new and advanced way that offers levels of protection for smart homes and smart devices that are simply not available elsewhere.

Dojo-App: A mobile application and the main tool for using Dojo. It has a simple and intuitive user interface that provides users with alerts if a security incident is identified as well as options on what action they can take if required. It’s easy to use and doesn’t require any technical knowledge whatsoever. The app is available for iOS and Android.

Most of the security and privacy risks are automatically mitigated without a user involvement. In case of red alerts (when user involvement is required) the user is alerted via the app with simple drop down menu. Once the user makes a selection the system is immediately updated.

Dojo by BullGuard value proposition is all about our customer’s security and privacy. The company does not collect any user data. The only data it collects is a metadata related to the devices behaviour and security/privacy related logs. This data is used to improve the device intelligence and leveraging to power of a crowd sourced security engine.

There is no need for any special preparation or installation procedures. The devices need to be connected as instructed by its manufacturer. Dojo will automatically guide the user via the app how to treat it security and privacy wise.

The Dojo Pebble is a design award-winning device that constantly displays the status of the home network through a series of concentric light circles.

Metadata is data that describes and gives information about other data. Within the context of Dojo it provides summaries about data that is travelling over the home network and allows Dojo to rapidly detect threats.

Any smart device that is connected to the home network is protected. Connected devices are often referred to generically as Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as connected cameras, baby monitors, smart locks, smart alarms, energy management systems such as thermostats, TVs, video streamers, printers and many more.

It protects all of these as well as smartphones, tablets, laptops, PC and IoT Gateways devices that are also connected to the home network whether wired or wireless.

If an attack is detected you are notified via the Dojo Pebble and the Dojo App. Both work together. The Dojo Pebble has three light rings; green, orange and red. Green signifies all is well and orange that a breach is taking place but it is being taken care of automatically. Red signals that user intervention is required. This is typically because a new device has been added to the home network and Dojo needs your authorisation to allow the device access to the network.

The Dojo Pebble is also synchronised with the Dojo App which you download onto your smart phone when you install Dojo. The app sends you real-time notifications if an ‘event’ is taking place. The notification provides you with detailed information about the potential breach, for instance, somebody was trying to deploy malware on one of your smart devices.

Most of the security and privacy breaches are resolved without any action on your part. As such threats are automatically nullified as a matter of course. However, if a red alert is received on the mobile app and you need to take action you are presented with a simple drop down menu that offers a number of choices. Red alerts are typically when an unrecognized device tries to get onto your network. Using the app, you can either allow it or block it.

The metadata is stored in Dojo-Labs cloud platform. This is a highly secure environment which uses the most robust encryption available. This cloud environment does not contain any user data and as a result users cannot be identified and neither can data be exploited.

You can choose which devices have access to your home network, to the internet or to other connected devices. You can also block or allow internet access from any device.

Dojo provides Phishing and malware detection by default, Hence you might see the following messages. If you see one of these messages, we recommend that you close your browser or the application on the device listed in the alert.

The site ahead contains malware: The site you're trying to visit might try to install bad software, called malware, on your computer.

  • Deceptive site ahead: The site you're trying to visit might be a phishing site.
  • The site ahead contains harmful programs: The site you're trying to visit might try to trick you into installing programs that cause problems when you’re browsing online.

Download with caution: Some sites try to trick you into downloading harmful software by telling you that you have a virus. Be careful not to download any harmful software.

Setup typically takes only a few minutes via app guided installation.

however it may take longer if you have complex home network setup. In that case it is recommanded to contact Dojo by BullGuard support for installation guidnace .

No additional software is required besides Dojo-Labs mobile app.

The Pebble battery life is approximately six months.

the Pebble is not rechargeable. The base unit is operated by a power adaptor and the Pebble is battery operated. When the Pebble battery expires, typically after six months, it needs to be replaced

The Dojo device needs to be physically located with the residential Wi-Fi router that you use. The Pebble can be located anywhere within your home as long as it is indoors.

There is no need for any special preparation or installation procedures. You simply connect any device to your home network as instructed by the manufacturer. Dojo will recognise that a new device has been added to the network and automatically guide you via the Dojo App about what you need to do from a security and privacy perspective. This typically consists of a few simple steps.

Dojo is designed to be controlled remotely when required. If you receive a red alert notice you simply use the app and the drop down menu to take the necessary action such as blocking a device. If you receive an orange alert you don’t need to take any action as Dojo automatically resolves the issue.

Dojo Mobile app has 3 major sections :

1. Dojo - Chat interface used by Dojo to notify you with all security and privacy related information.

2. My Devices - High level veiw of your home  Wi-Fi network and all the connected devices.

3. Settings - genral service and application settings.

1. Overview of Dojo Screen :

Dojo screen acts as chat application and informs you with security, provacy and network related alerts.

Dojo app is using notification services and it is very important to enable the notification service for Dojo app.

A. Discovering Devices in Your Network

Once the Dojo base unit is activated and ready, it scans your home Wi-Fi network and discovers all yourconnected devices. As soon as devices are discovered, they are       displayed in the My Devices tab. A push notification is sent is sent for every newly discovered device and appears in the chat inerface as well.

Note: Dojo places every new device by default in the Guests or Unprotected group. You need to move each device into the desired group based on the device nature. Device with Fixed IP can not be moved to other group and will remain in unprotected group until their setting will change from fixed IP to DHCP enabled. this is done for each device in a different way using the device management application.

B. Device Groups

Devices that have been discovered by Dojo can be sorted into 4 different groupsgroups. Each group has particular characteristics and capabilities. By placing a device in a particular group, you define how it interacts with other devices in the network, how it accesses the Internet, and how it is protected. The following groups are available:

Smart home group

  • Devices in this group are protected by Dojo against malicious activity, unauthorized access from any network, malware, Trojans, and so forth.
  • Usually, you would place your smart home devices, cameras, door locks, and alarm systems in this group.
  • It is possible to open external ports from the Internet to devices in this group, for example, setting port forwarding for remote access to your camera.

Personal Devices group

  • Devices in tthis group are protected by Dojo against malicious webpages, unauthorized access from other network, malware, Trojans, etc.
  • Devices in the Personal Devices group are allowed to access and configure the router.
  • Usually, you would place your smartphones, mobile devices, tablets, PCs, Mac, laptops, and other advanced devices in this group.
  • It is possible to open external ports from the Internet to devices in the Personal Devices network.

Guests group

  • Access to the Internet is enabled and devices in this group can access any website.
  • Devices in this group has basic protecttion from malware, Trojans, malicious websites, and so forth.
  • Devices in this group are not allowed to access other devices in the Personal Devices and Smart Home groups.
  • Devices in this group are not allowed to access the router management portal.

Unprotected group

  • Devices with static (manual) IP addresses of the router network are placed automatically in this group.
  • Once you change the IP address or a device from static (manual) to DHCP-assigned, the device moves into the Guest group.
  • Devices in the Unprotected group cannot be moved to other groups.
  • Access to the Internet is unrestricted and the devices can access any website.
  • Devices in the Unprotected group are not protected from malware, Trojans, malicious websites and so forth.
  • Devices are not allowed to access other devices in the Personal and Smart Home groups.
  • To enable a device to entirely bypass Dojo, you can move it from its current group to the Unprotected group.
